SID Lecture 1.1 Extending RPG with DATA-INTO, DATA-GEN & Open Access
In recent years IBM have taken a new approach to RPG enhancements. Rather that try to develop all the facilities that RPG developers will ever need, they have instead provided mechanisms that open the doors for other developers to enhance the language.

Open Access, for example, can be used to allow RPG to directly read IFS files, or to retrieve data from web services.

Similarly DATA-INTO allows RPG to be extended to consume any formatted data such as JSON or CSVs.
DATA-GEN does the reverse and allows you to generated formatted text data.

This session will show you how these features work and how you can use them to meet your specific business needs.

SID Lecture 1.2 The Hidden Gems in RDi V9.6
The pace of enhancement to RDi (IBM Rational Developer for i) has ramped up in the last couple of years. RDi V9.6 - with its 7 point releases (so far) - is chock full of useful features. It's hard to keep up with everything that's new.
Susan will demonstrate many of these new features, such as:
 - How RDi answers "Where am I?",
 - Object table becomes more PDM-like and why you should care
 - The latest forays into automated RPG refactoring
And many, many more. Keep your productivity increasing by exploiting the latest that RDi has to offer.

SID Lecture 1.3 Creating Web Services with IBM's IWS
"We have to supply our vendors with a web service! Can you build one?"

If you have faced this question there's no need to panic. Every IBM i comes with tooling that can make it easy for you to get started in building web services with nothing more than your knowledge of RPG and the help of the wizards in IBM's Integrated Web Services Server (IWS).

In this session, Jon will introduce you to the basics of constructing and deploying REST web services with IWS. He will also introduce you to the latest enhancements that allow you to simply deploy an SQL statement as a web service.

In addition to creating web services Jon will also discuss how to test your new creations.

SID Lecture 2.3 RPG Procs & SRVPGMs: Some Assembly Required
ILE brings with it the topics of procedures, modules, service programs, binding directories and binder language - not to mention activation groups. How do they all fit together?

In this session, Susan will walk through a demonstration of the steps of the following topics. In the process, we'll discover some of the problems that can occur - what they look like and how to fix or avoid them.
 - Creating a (very) simple RPG procedure in a module
 - How (and why) to put that module into a service program
 - How (and why) to create a binding directory
 - How to use the binding directory to create programs to use our procedure
 - Adding a new procedure to the same module and service program
 - Pointers for testing procedures in service programs
- How to maintain the service program over time - including the use of binder language to avoid signature violations

SID Lecture 1.4 Creating & processing JSON with RPG
JSON becomes more and more important by the day, and a growing number of IBM i shops now need to generate and/or process JSON data.

In this session, you learn how to use the YAJL Open Source JSON utilities which allow RPG programmers to easily generate and consume JSON. We will also discuss the YAJL derived DATA-INTO parser and how it can be used to easily consume most JSON data.

You will learn how to use the free YAJL tools to generate and parse JSON. You will also learn the benefits and limitations of using RPG's DATA-INTO with the YAJLINTO parser.
YAJL is an important alternative to using SQL to consume and generate JSON. It can handle any JSON document without jumping through the hoops sometimes required by SQL. It is an important tool for RPGers to add to their toolbox.
